How I Work

I paint with watercolor, ink, dye, and carbon. I often
work on handmade abaca paper which I love for its ability to take color, its lovely raw edges, and
its toughness. I fold, sew, and burn paper. I often use typed or handwritten text. Image, surface, and language are all important in my work.

I have always loved paper. Since early childhood
I have been drawn to the beauty of old books, maps, newspapers, postcards and stamps.

When I began to travel, I discovered even more of
the expressive possibilities of paper. Chinese cutwork, Balinese puppets, Japanese origami and the great beauty of Islamic calligraphy. In India I saw laundry delivered in bags made from recycled newspapers. Beautiful!

Paper also works for practical reasons. It is easily transportable, storable, and affordable.
